MR. D. MORRIS, in his account of this rainbow (p. 436) appears to have fallen into a mistake in stating that its inner diameter-taken by Capt. Winchester, R.N.R.-was 43° 08'. It should be, I think, ``inner semidiameter''. The first circumsolar bow has a semidiameter of 41° 37'. That is almost necesarily invisible. The second circumsolar bow has a semidiameter of 43° 52', and is rarely visible. I have no doubt that was the bow witnessed on board the Norham Castle on August 16
