Laboratory experiments have indicated the possible prolonged existence in a plasma of current sheets possessing a significant store of magnetic energy, which is equivalent to the stage of energy accumulation before a solar flare. An examination of the explosive phase of current-sheet destruction shows that, at the moment of destruction, high-velocity plasma streams arise, and strong electric fields are induced which effectively accelerate charged particles. This points to a similarity between the explosive phase of solar flares and current-sheet destruction in laboratory experiments.
