Observations made in the vicinity of the polar cap boundary (PCB) in a case of marked north/south asymmetry of solar electrons are presented. The observations of energetic particles in regions on the nightside where the ion dispersion indicates equatorward convection during active periods will give the position of the boundary between open and closed magnetic field lines with higher accuracy than monitoring auroral electrons. The equatorward displacement of auroral electrons with respect to the boundary is as large as 2-3 deg in latitude and equals the displacement expected for low-energy protons. This suggests that, as on the dayside, the quasi-charge neutrality on the nightside is maintained mostly within the thermal population without much contribution from the cold plasma.
