The paper examines an effect that leads to the penetration of the solar wind magnetic field into cometary ionospheres: the 'loading' of the solar wind plasma by ionized cometary molecules, an effect which is predominant in the region of collisionless interaction of the cometary ionosphere and the solar wind. Qualitative considerations are set forth which aim to establish the presence of the seepage of the solar wind magnetic field into the cometary plasma and to determine the rate of seepage.
