Methods are proposed for the correct determination of the planetary distribution of maximum electron densities (NmF), the corresponding critical frequencies (f0F), the heights of these densities (hmF), and one of the most characteristic parameters describing the international reference profile Ne(h) of the F-region. The determination relies upon measurements of the 1356-A and 6300-A lines, and on a local measurement of electron density. Necessary orbital parameters for conducting pertinent satellite experiments are indicated; and accurate expressions are derived for the intensity of the 1356-A line; and some inaccuracies in the determination of NmF and hmF on the basis of intensity measurements of the two aforementioned oxygen lines are discussed.
