Forefront measurements in astrophysics require relatively large instruments exposed above the atmosphere for extended periods of time. RICH detectors are being introduced to this field because of their capability for high accuracy measurements and well understood and quantified fluctuations. They also have a defined absolute response to particles at a particular velocity, an important requirement for the accurate determination of particle energy spectra. RICH detectors are especially suited to this type of experiment because of their low mass and the ease with which background can be identified and rejected. We report on a large RICH experiment that has been flown on a high altitude balloon in 1991 and discuss future applications of this technology.
