Minor Planets: Polarimetry
Scientific paper
The results of polarimetrical observations of the Amor group asteroids 1036 Ganymed (1989 April - October, 34 nights, the phase angle range α = 9.7 - 37.7°) and 1627 Ivar (1990 May - August, 12 nights, α = 34.4 - 64.1°) are presented. The parameters of polarization phase curves are determined and used to obtain the first polarimetric estimates of geometrical albedos and diameters (0.14, 37.3 km and 0.11, 8.7 km for Ganymed and Ivar, respectively). These values are in good agreement with the available radiometric and IRAS data. The authors analysed the spectral dependence of S-type asteroid polarization in the phase angle range α = 10 - 90° and concluded that the inversion occurs when polarization is going from negative values (direct dependence) to positive ones (inverse dependence).
