This paper discusses the causes of the scatter of the data from different authors on the brightness of the moon and on the illuminance created by the moon. It is shown that this is caused by the variation of the distance from the moon to the earth, as well as by the use of two different photometric measurement system when determining the visual stellar magnitude of the moon. Improved data are presented for the minimum, mean, and maximum photometric characteristics of the moon above the atmosphere and on the earth's surface.
