Mars is a favorite site for proposed planetary rover studies; it has the following characteristics: intriguing geology, surface features, and history; and an environment that is not terrbily hostile. For many years, 'Big Rover' was an essential element in the former Soviet space program. During the evolution of the current Soviet Mars project, it seemed attractive to include a rover. The idea was realized in 1990 when a small rover was included as a high risk experiment in the payload of the descent module. The main features of the mission and its science are presented and the limitations are analyzed. The further steps and improvements are foreseen.
