While it has been suggested by Guertler et al. (1981) that SiO cannot be the material responsible for the interstellar 9.7-micron feature, the present discussion of their arguments shows them to be questionable. It is noted that experimental data on the thermal stability of SiO under reducing conditions typical of circumstellar regions may be instrumental in establishing whether SiO is an important interstellar grain constituent. Millar and Dudley (1980) have discussed the constraints imposed on interstellar dust composition by 10- and 20-micron observations, and shown that SiO could be an important component of the dust.
