An assessment is presented of various considerations which restrain the exclusion of the possibility that the mean density of matter may be sufficiently great to close the universe, although density estimates based on deep optical samples of galaxies appear low. Given an assumed cluster galaxy mass-to-light ratio of 325, mean density increases by about one order of magnitude over previous estimates.
