Scientific paper

we plan to investigate three nearby nuclear starbursts to determine their structure on parsec scales. we shall image ngc253, ngc2903, and ngc4736 from the uv to the nir in four colours, and from these images determine the distribution of stars within the nucleus and construct accurate colour-magnitude diagrams for the luminous stars. unresolved starlight will allow us to chart the overall structure of the nucleus and localize specific dust features. the distribution of young stars and stellar clusters are of fundamental interest, and bears directly on the physics of starbursts. we shall also image ngc253 in h-alpha to determine the structure of warm gas in the superwind. we shall combine these high-resolution observations with ground-based nir imaging and spectroscopy to allow detailed study of these complex systems.
