Markarian 231 is an extraordinary galaxy that shows a brilliant stellar nucleus superimposed on a disturbed disk-like structure, from which two tails emerge. The object appears to represent a transition between a galaxy and a quasar and will be useful to assess the utility of the refurbished HST in determining host galaxy morphology around quasars and to explore the high dynamic range of WFPC2.
