Mars: Tectonics, Earth: Plate Tectonics
Scientific paper
When examining the tectonics of the one-plate planet Mars it is possible to test and even to develop further some ideas with respect to Earth's plate-tectonic paradigm. The definition of terrestrial plate movements does not unambiguously identify the actual mantle processes involved. One way to learn more about the endogeneous development of planets is to undertake comparative studies. The main tectonic structures of Mars are interpreted to give information concerning mantle processes which may relate to those processes driving Earth's plate tectonics, but which in the case of Mars, have been insufficient to break Martian lithosphere into plates, but which have been sufficient to cause rift-block tectonics and to build the Tharsis bulge.
