KASCADE is a EAS installation under construction at Karlsruhe, intended to study the cosmic ray mass composition in the energy range of 1014 to 1017 eV. This will be achieved by a simultaneous measurement of the electron, the muon and the hadron component. The apparatus and the Monte Carlo codes used to simulate its performance are described.
