Recent surveys of young clusters ((tau)<10 Myr) have reported the discovery of brown dwarfs with masses down to ~8 M_Jup. Data of this kind provide important constraints on the bottom of the mass function. However, the mass estimates of young brown dwarfs are largely determined by their spectral types, which often have large errors. I propose to use optical spectroscopy with GMOS to measure accurate spectral types for the faintest known brown dwarfs in the Upper Sco and Chamaeleon II associations, which will enable more reliable mass estimates.
