LAST evening, about five minutes after five o'clock, I observed that a cloud in the south-west was strongly illuminated from below. As the sun had set more than half an hour, and considerably more to the south, I was surprised by the degree of illumination. Observing more closely, I saw about 5° above the horizon, and about 12°-15° north of Hartland Point, the appearance of the sun in a fog, but only about one-third the apparent diameter when in the same place. I watched it for about five minutes, when it was gradually obscured by the rising mist.
