Moessbauer Spectroscopy on Fe57 is a nuclear technique, which provides direct identification of iron-bearing phases, and allows the quantitative measurement of these phases and the distribution of iron among its oxidation states, e.g. the Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratio. In particular it will allow the determination of the iron-bearing phases present in the Martian soil. Our Moessbauer spectrometer MIMOS II will be part of the payload of the upcoming space missions of NASA and ESA, the Mars-Exploration-Rovers 2003 and the Mars-Express-2003 Beagle, respectively. The instrument is operating in backscattering geometry and no sample preparation is needed. In preparation of these missions laboratory studies on the weathering of rocks under environmental conditions, and the formation and composition of weathering rinds are done or in progress. The studies are also of importance for the understanding of the weathering products found in the Martian meteorites, and to separate products of terrestrial origin from those of possibly Martian origin. Preliminary results of both weathering studies and investigations on some of the Martian meteorites will be discussed.
