Predictions of the anticipated activity, peak time and particle size distributions for the 2001 Leonid storm are reviewed. The predictions are compared to the first observational results from the three comet dust trail encounters of November 18, 2001. Implications for meteoroid stream models and predictions for the 2002 return are evaluated. First results of new airborne meteor and meteor train observations are presented and discussed in the context of comet dust composition and morphology, the fate of organic matter in extraterrestrial accretion at the time of the origin of life, and the physics and chemistry of the upper atmosphere.
