Global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations have shown the presence of antiparallel merging, component merging or both in the dayside magnetosphere, at locations that depend on the east-west component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). In this study, we quantify ion acceleration at the dayside by measuring where and by what process ions enter and gain energy. The approach is to compute a large sample of ion trajectories in the time-dependent MHD electric and magnetic fields for magnetospheric configurations forming in response to an IMF with an east-west component. Points along particle trajectories where significant acceleration occurs are then mapped to identify acceleration regions. These regions are related to the locations and nature of the dayside merging regions and the cusp in the MHD simulation. The accelerated particles subsequently populate the boundary layers and plasma ssheet.
