Changes in ocean angular momentum (OAM) can result from fluctuations in ocean currents and mass fields and are related, by conservation principles, to changes in the angular momentum of the solid Earth and/or atmosphere. If mass redistribution is involved, changes in the planet's gravity field are also implicit. The study of OAM in the context of the variable Earth rotation and gravity field can thus provide insight on ocean-atmosphere-solid Earth interactions. We will review what is presently known about OAM variability, on time scales from days to decades, from analysis of several different models of the ocean circulation. Both equatorial and axial components of OAM, related to polar motion and length of day, respectively, will be addressed. Topics to be examined include the observability of OAM signals in terms of their effects on the planet's angular momentum budget, the relative importance of currents and mass redistribution to OAM variability, and the impact of ocean data assimilation on the estimation of OAM and related quantities. Future prospects for the study of OAM will be discussed in light of expected developments in data gathering and modeling capabilities.
