Poleward Boundary Intensifications (PBIs) are localized auroral emissions that have recently been associated with Bursty Bulk Flows (BBFs) in the geomagnetic tail. Little is known, however, about the driving mechanisms of BBFs and how they map to the ionosphere. We present OpenGGCM simulation results from an event recently published by Zesta et al. (JGR, 111/A5, A05303, 10.1029/2005JA011200, 2006). Although we cannot expect that the simulation reproduces the BBF and PBI signatures in detail, both BBFs and PBIs are produced in the model and their characteristics are fairly close to the observed signatures of BBFs and PBIs. We link individual PBIs to fast plasma streams in the tail and we show that these flows are driven by localized reconnection events. We also show that the fast streams are typically 2-5 RE wide and that they last longer than typical BBFs. The BBF observations capture only part of the streams which make meandering motions in the plasma sheet.
