Simulation results are presented for the dynamics of charged particles in the vicinity of a shock front in a magnetized plasma. For simplicity, a test kinetic approach is adopted. In particular, the shock, conditions are calculated from the Rankine-Hugoniot condition in the ideal MHD approximation, and particle distribution function at different locations in the shock is computed from Liouville's theorem, using particle back tracing symplectic integration. We discuss the similarities and differences between the results obtained from our test kinetic approach and those assumed in the ideal MHD approximation. Comparisons are made for plane perpendicular shocks, and for a magnetospheric bow shock as calculated with a global MHD simulation code.
