On 21 January 2001, the Cluster and FAST spacecraft simultaneously observed a flow channel poleward of the cusp near Sondrestrom, Greenland, coupled to a series of Alfvénic flow bursts. These observations have been interpreted as being due to momentum transfer continuing on field lines that have been reconnected ~ 10 minutes previously, and they are associated with interplanetary B_z < 0 and |B_y| ≥ |B_z| [C. J. Farrugia et al., Ann. Geophys. 22, 2891, 2004]. Here we compare these observations to the results of a global MHD simulation of this event, and we discuss the implications of this comparison.
