A class of signatures of transient reconnection at the magnetopause called "crater" flux transfer events was discovered in the AMPTE data sets in the 1980s. These were characterized by a complex of signatures in magnetic field, plasma flows and particles giving rise to a layered structure. In this presentation we use the multi-spacecraft capability of the Cluster mission to probe further the internal structure of these FTEs seen in the magnetosphere and in the magnetosheath. We use data from various instruments on CLUSTER: FGM, EDI, CIS, PEACE, and EFW. We are able to unravel the structure further and relate high resolution EDI and FGM and EFW data to processes near the separatrices and to theoretical considerations.
