The aliphatic hydrocarbon content of the crude oil from the Bell Creek
oil field of Powder River County, Montana, has been studied. Mass
spectrometric fragmentation patterns indicate the presence of all twelve
isoprenoid hydrocarbons ranging from C 14 to C 25 as well as
head-to-tail conformations. Precursors of the compounds are discussed.
