A nonlinear least squares (NL) method is developed for determining the temperature models of coronal active regions which is based on the measured X-ray line intensities. A comparison of the NL method with the Withbroe-Sylwester (WS) iterative procedure (Withbroe, 1975; Sylwester, 1977) shows that both methods allow the multi-temperature analysis of the measured line fluxes without any assumptions about the shape of the calculated model, while the resolution of both methods strongly depends on the kind and number of lines used. Using the Solar Maximum Mission line set, it is determined that this resolution in the high-temperature range (above 15-20 x 10 to the 6th K) is very low in both methods. However, it is found that the resolution is better in the NL method than in the WS method. In addition, the NL method gives better agreement of the calculated model with the measured line fluxes, and the NL method allows the study of the temperature dependence of the mean electron density in cases when the density-dependent lines are used.
