Scientific paper

The current understanding of the evolution of quasars is briefly
examined. Particular consideration is given to the dependence of the
number of optically variable quasars on red shift, and to the
relationship between the dependence of the fraction of quasars having
identified absorption lines in the spectrum on emission red shift.
