Recent work has shown that wintertime stratospheric conditions are related to tropical SST variations associated with ENSO and that the main mechanism for connecting tropical SST and polar stratospheric conditions is through modulation of the high latitude planetary wave pattern, most especially North Pacific variability closely related to the canonical patterns of variability there. Stratospheric warmings are, in turn, known to influence midlatitude variability. At least in the Northern Hemisphere, then, midlatitude responses to global warming are dependent on the zonal structure of the response of tropical SST to global warming.
