An improved method for the processing of experimental data is proposed to explain discrepancies in the determination of the maximum depth of the development of extensive air showers as a function of primary-particle energy. This method involves: (1) detailed modeling of the shower-sampling process and (2) an improved calculation of the dependence of the halfwidth of the Cerenkov-radiation pulse on the position of the shower maximum.
