One of the widely adapted experimental techniques for the direct search for dark matter is the use of inorganic crystal scintillators. Several experimental groups have carried out direct dark matter search experiments using NaI(Tl), CsI(Tl) and CaF2(Eu) crystals. The history, status and critical issues regarding these crystal scintillators as dark matter detectors are reviewed in this paper, and the prospects of performing future dark matter searches with these detectors are discussed.
