The formation of the solar system from cosmic plasma is briefly discussed. The evolution of interstellar clouds and of the solar nebula is summarized, and the information on the early solar system that may be stored in the Saturnian rings and the asteroid belt is described. The rings may be formed by planetesimals which were prevented from accreting by the tidal forces of the planet.
