The transition region of Earth's bow shock is collisionless space. Its thickness is much less than the free path of particles. The collisionless heating arises from Landau damping. It may transform and distribute energy from turbulent sources to almost all particles. In so small collisionless space, the kinetic energy of the solar wind is fast converted into thermal energy of lower reaches by collisionless heating.
