The well-known relation for mean surface brightness is used to investigate the hypothesis of the expansion of the universe. The substantial error found in measurements of comparable mean surface brightness (CMSB) indicates that the relationship of CMSB to the linear rigid diameter can only be taken as a hypothesis. The absence of E galaxies in the sample of nearby galaxies selected on the basis of star resolution and the presence of H I line width provides support for the occurrence of these galaxies at the reverse hemihypersphere of the universe. The presence of various late-type galaxies in the sample indicates that they may belong to the close hemihypersphere of the universe.
