The fission of heavy nuclides is examined in a dense stellar plasma. The correction in the Coulomb energy due to the interaction between the ion and the induced-electron charge density affects the process of fission and reduces the fission barrier depending upon the physical situation. Shell- and surface-symmetry effects are included in the calculation of the fission barrier as a function of the fissility parameter χ and surface energy of a spherical nuclear drop E0s. The fissionability of some of the heavy elements that are likely precursors of superheavy elements in an r-process chain may adversely affect the formation of superheavy elements in stellar situations.
