The spectrum of reflected radiation and the thermophysical properties of the Martian soil are used to develop a model of the soil. The resulting model follows: (1) the Martian soil consists of particulate, basic and intermediate igneous rock, with a small admixture of geothite; the highland soil consists of more acid rocks than the mare soil; (2) the soil consists of two types of particles: comparatively large particles (tenths of a millimeter in size) and micron size particles; the large particles possibly are conglomerates of the small ones; and (3) the average soil density is about 1.22 g cu/cm at a depth of 2 to 4 cm, and porosity is about 0.6.
