The present knowledge of the chemical and physical constitution of comets is outlined, and the relative importance of cometary research towards an understanding of the solar system formation is discussed. Aspects examined include comets in the solar wind: plasma physical aspects, the nucleus of a comet and the coma, and the tasks of a comet mission. Finally, a question to be answered by first space missions to comets are considered and planned missions are briefly discussed.
