A process of segregation of iron-rich from silicate-rich particulate matter in the protoplanetary nebula has been investigated in a quantitative model taking into account aerodynamics and intergrowth of dust grains. Segregation should have occurred if silicate-rich grains were smaller than iron-rich grains, the latter being about 10-2 cm in size or larger. In this paper the model is briefly described and geophysical implications are discussed.
The following conclusions are inferred. (1) The Earth and inner planets would form with an Fe/Si abundance ratio higher than the primitive ratio in the nebula (= solar ratio). (2) If the gas was in the Earth's zone of the solar system when the accumulation of the present-core-size embryo of the Earth was finishing, the Earth could form as an inhomogeneous planet with the original iron-rich core and a silicate mantle. The same conclusion is applicable to Venus and Mercury.
