Pirog and Urbanovich (1978) have studied the evolution of the electron-flux spectrum as a function of the depth of penetration, making allowance for the production of secondary electrons, and have calculated the vertical profiles of O2(+), N2(+), and O(+) ion production. In the present paper, these data are used as a basis to examine the excitation of basic auroral emissions.
