A unique relationship is established between the presence (or absence) of geomagnetic effects (SSI and SI) after an isolated high-intensity flare in the near zone on the solar disk and the orientation of the magnetic axis of a bipolar group on the sun. The relationship is interpreted in terms of a pronounced flattening of flare-induced shock fronts with respect to the vertical plane running through the flare and parallel to the bipolar group axis.
