The properties of the boundary separating the region dominated by the solar wind and that of the plasma of planetary origin, the planetopause that has been detected in experiments on the Phobos 2 spacecraft, have been investigated. It is shown that the properties of this boundary are similar to those of analogous chemical boundaries; the cometopause near comet Halley and the chemical boundary which exists at Venus at times of high solar wind dynamic pressure. Numerical simulation of the flow past Mars shows that, at a maximum of solar activity, the interaction of the dense neutral atmosphere of Mars with the solar wind can lead to charge exchange between the solar wind protons and the neutral atmosphere, and to a significant decrease of the concentration of solar wind protons in the transition region near the planetopause.
