During a radial velocity study of the prototypical low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) Sco X-1, we discovered an H(alpha) absorption feature in addition to the well-known H(alpha) emission line. Absorption lines in active LMXBs are exceedingly rare and have never been seen before in Sco X-1. The H(alpha) absorption is centered redward of the H(alpha) emission and appears to vary in shape and depth over the orbital cycle. We ask for four nights of 1.5m spectroscopy to explore whether this H(alpha) absorption is a persistent feature in the spectrum of Sco X-1. It is likely that the H(alpha) emission and absorption components are formed in physically distinct locations in the disk and will offer unique insight into the structure of the binary. We will also perform simultaneous photometry with the 0.9m telescope to accurately determine the phasing between the radial velocity and photometric variability. Sco X-1 is known to exhibit discrete optically bright and faint states corresponding to changes in its X-ray characteristics. The simultaneous photometry will allow us to also correlate any changes in emission line strength with these photometric states.
