Magellanic Clouds, Star Clusters, Pre-Main Sequence Stars
Scientific paper
The Large Magellanic Cloud is one of the most interesting targets for the study of cluster formation. The IRSF/SIRIUS group is executing a near infrared survey toward the Large Magellanic Cloud. I present a result of the survey; a study of cluster formation in the N159/N160 complex region. We detected a number of candidates of intermediate to high mass pre-main-sequence stars and OB stars in the complex region. We revealed that there is a pre-main-sequence cluster at a tip of a giant molecular cloud which reportedly did not show any sign of star formation activity. We are possibly witnessing the beginning of a large cluster formation. Comparison of spatial distribution of different population of young stars suggests a large scale sequential cluster formation in this region.
