Scientific paper

An efficient numerical method for solving the detailed radiation transfer problem in extended spherical envelopes is presented which is valid for discontinuous source functions and discontinuous state variables. It is shown how the equations of motion and radiation transport can be coupled and solved simultaneously, and the solution of the time-independent radiative transfer problem in the dusty gas surrounding a cocoon star is described. Also discussed are practical considerations with regard to total storage and time requirements, stability and convergence properties, and numerical accuracy.
