In this article I review some of the advances that were made with cooled trapped and stored highly charged ions. SMILETRAP at Stockholm University is a mass spectrometer with extreme precision that allows measuring ion masses to 10-10 accuracy. The SMILETRAP concept rests on the fact that the precision increases linearly with the charge of the ion. Examples of mass determinations are those of Se and Ge for the Q value of neutrino-less double β decay, of 20Mg and 24Mg for the bound state g-factor, the Cs to p mass ratio for a new determination of the fine-structure constant α, the accurate masses of 3H and 3He for the ν-mass determination, an mass measurements of heavy atoms for solving the Hg puzzle and accurate masses for the determination of electron binding energies for different ionization states of ions. Cooling highly-charged ions in a storage rings is a supposition to study their recombination with electrons. Knowledge of this process is important in astrophysics and fusion research, besides being of fundamental interest. Here, I present measurements of the recombination rate coefficients in absolute scale both in energy and height, done at the heavy-ion storage ring CRYRING at MSL in Stockholm. With cooled ions, we measure recombination resonances and thus energy splittings in excited states of the ion for crucial tests of relativistic, correlation, and QED effects with meV accuracy. A section concerns the still rather open question of the puzzling recombination enhancement over the radiative recombination theory. Applications of recombination rates with complex highly charged ions for fusion and astrophysical plasmas are shown.
