A systematic study is made of embedding class 2 vacuum spacetimes for
which the Petrov type is either D or N. It is shown that embedding class
2 can only occur (i) in Petrov type D for the Ehlers - Kundt classes A
and B and (ii) in Petrov type N for the pp-waves and a subfamily of the
Cahen - Spelkens metrics.
