Aurorae: Energy Distribution
Scientific paper
The latitude dispersion of the ion fluxes has been reported for the polar cusp. The data from the charged particle experiment onboard the APEX mission show that similar dispersion can often be observed around the whole polar cap. Moreover, the dispersion features can be clearly identified for electron fluxes during the same boundary passage. These structures are usually narrow, their latitudinal extent is about 1°- 2° at ionospheric heights. The fluxes are nearly monoenergetic but their pitch-angle distribution is very broad. The decrease of the flux energy with latitude is more typical but opposite cases have been observed. The paper deals with the systematic study of these phenomena under different conditions.
