A narrow-band statistical radiative-transfer model is combined with a kinetic model for use in calculating NLTE IR limb emission caused by ozone. The model is developed so that the relative importance of O and O3 densities as inputs for the kinetic model can be evaluated quickly with the narrow-band statistical approach. Three atmospheric O profiles are employed to study the influences of O and O3 densities on the calculation of the NLTE limb IR radiance of ozone. The integrated limb-ozone radiances are shown to depend strongly on the assumed O and O3 profiles, and the profiles are compared to experimental data to confirm this notion. The narrow-band statistical model can be used effectively to study the NLTE processes in ozone when the O and O3 densities are derived with a high degree of precision.
