Superposed epoch analyses are used to study changes in geomagnetic activity and ionospheric absorption according to cloud types on a long time scale. The sample of interplanetary magnetic clouds is divided into two classifications: (1) NS clouds which have a Bz that is first directed northward and then southward; and (2) SN clouds that demonstrate the opposite transition. Geomagnetic activity is found to increase in the vicinity of both types of passages, although a variation in geomagnetic indices is noted after the passage. The recovery to normal actvity levels is slower for NS clouds, and the enhancements in the ionospheric absorption of radio waves vary according to cloud type. The results suggest that a decrease in cosmic ray intensity may be linked to the presence of magnetic clouds.
