The fundamental intrinsic limit to sky subtraction in general, set by the inherent lumpiness of the astronomical sky, is determined, and a practical algorithm which allows data from fiber-fed spectrographs to be sky-subtracted with both precision and reliability close to this limit is presented. The general considerations discussed are of relevance to all techniques of faint-object spectroscopy, including long-slit and multislit systems. Precise and reliable sky subtraction is found to be possible with fiber systems without requiring a significant overhead in observing time, providing a factor of two potential gain in observing efficiency by obviating the perceived need for beamswitching techniques.
